The Top-of-the-Line X Series Elliptical Trainer
Each of the Spirit Fitness X series elliptical trainers is a fine quality machine. The Spirit XE700 model is the top-of-the-line X series elliptical trainer. This is the type of elliptical trainer you might find in a health club.
Even on sale, the Spirit Fitness XE700 elliptical trainer costs over $2,000. Its platform has a footprint as large as a standard institutional machine. It weighs a hefty 215 pounds. Basically, the Spirit XE700 is a lot of elliptical trainer!
No outside power source is required to operate the Spirit XE700. This one is self-generating with a self-generating induction brake. The advantage of this is that you don’t have to set up the elliptical trainer near an outlet or use an extension cord. That makes it ideal for use in a commercial setting where there are several machines lined up in the same room.
As do other Spirit Fitness XE elliptical trainers, the XE700 model has a frame constructed of commercial grade steel and a front flywheel that is made of steel. At an assembled weight of 215 pounds, this machine is quite durable and sturdy.
In fact, it is recommended for light commercial use, in addition to residential use.
Several of the features found on the Spirit XE700 are also found on other Spirit XE elliptical trainers. Included among those features are:
The Spirit XE700 lacks some of the features that the less expensive models have. The focus on this particular model is quality, durability and stability. It is meant to withstand years of constant use by a number of people.
Pedals are oversized and have a 2-degree inversion capability, which is standard on all Spirit XE elliptical machines. However, unlike the other Spirit XE models, the XE700 does not have pedal angle adjustments.
The Spirit Fitness XE700 elliptical trainer has no incline ramp and, thus, no incline ramp motor. It does, however, have a nice enhanced LED display in the console. It also has high-quality, silicone rubber active buttons to easily input workout information.
As previously mentioned, the Spirit XE700 elliptical machine requires no electrical power, and it has a self-generating induction brake as opposed to a magnetic resistance brake.
The Spirit XE700 elliptical trainer might be impractical for most people. After all, it is rather expensive, it’s heavy, and it takes up quite a bit of space. However, it IS a well-built machine!
It lacks some of the extra features that the less expensive Spirit ellipticals have, but it makes up for the missing features in its fine construction and parts. It is, after all, suitable for light commercial use! Maintenance of this machine should be minimal (if any) in a residential setting.
When used in a residence, the Spirit Fitness XE700 elliptical trainer is backed by a 10-year parts warranty (3 years in a light commercial setting). The resistance brake is backed by a lifetime warranty for residential use and a 5-year warranty for light commercial use. The frame has a lifetime warranty in either setting.
If you have plenty of space (you won’t want to be moving this heavy equipment around), if money is no object, and if you want a simple, but high-quality elliptical trainer, the Spirit Fitness XE700 is one to consider.
Another option to consider is the Sole E95 Elliptical Trainer. It is built by the same company and is similar in design. In fact, if you look at the two consoles they are exactly the same except for the color. The Sole E95 has a couple of advantages. First, the power incline feature. Second, it cost about $400 less.

A Serious Machine for Serious Users
The 2015 Precor EFX 447 elliptical is their top of the line commercial grade crosstrainer for the home. It is not cheap and typically sells for around $6,000, but what you are getting is a serious machine, designed for serious users. In fact, the design is very similar to the models that are sold for light commercial use – apartment complexes, fire stations, hotels, etc. , and many of the components on the EFX 447 are the same that are used in the commercial models.
It is the similarity between the commercial models and top grade residential models that distinguishes Precor from the competition. The commercial environment becomes the testing ground for Precor home ellipticals, and the result is some of the most durable crosstrainers in industry. In fact, Precor has one of the lowest rates for service issues on new product deliveries.
Smooth, Natural Elliptical Motion — The elliptical motion is like no other. Precor invented the concept of the elliptical trainer. It was based on extensive research and development, and the design is protected by strict patents. It is this fluid and nature motion that distinguishes their elliptical, and it is one of the reasons people are willing to pay a premium.
CrossRamp Technology — The other feature that contributes to the Precor reputation is the CrossRamp technology, which allows you to incline the elliptical motion. By increasing the angle of the elliptical motion you are able to target a variety of lower body muscles, in addition to increasing your cardio burn. What distinguishes the CrossRamp from other incline designs is that as you raise the incline you maintain an true elliptical motion. Once again this is covered by one of many Precor patents. In order to get around this patent other companies have to compromise on their incline design.
The combination of the CrossRamp Technology and the smooth, natural elliptical motion, results in a workout that has a lower level of perceived exertion. You are getting more results with the perception that you are exercising less. It should be noted that the Precor EFX 447 is their only model that lets you increase the incline to a steep 40 degrees. The others top at 25 and 30 degrees.
Convertible Handlebars — The EFX 447 is the only model that allows you to disengage the upper body handlebars. There are many Precor converts who are solely focused on the benefits of the lower body workout. In fact, it was suggested to me by a representative of the company that just utilizing the lower body exercise will get you the most intense cardio burn, since your lower body consists of the largest muscle groups and they burn calories more effectively. By using the upper body feature you divide the resistance and consequently reduce the efficiency. Regardless, whether you are a purist and prefer only the lower body workout, or you want to target both your upper and lower body, you have a choice.
The Precor EFX 445 comes with the new 40 premium console. It is designed to maximize and personalized your workout. You pay a premium for this option, but the numerous features justify the cost. They include…
The console on the Precor EFX 445 is Priva compatible. Priva is Precor’s mobile app. You can save your workout through the USB port to a mobile device and download it to your online account. Through your account you can store workouts, get training recommendations and record your workout stats. Having the ability to record and review your stats is a great way to motivate you to achieve your fitness goals.
240 Lbs. Unit Weight — The Precor EFX 447 has a hefty 240 lb. weight, which means it is extremely stable. You probably want to opt for inside delivery if you purchase one.
Warranty — Lifetime frame and welds, 10 year parts and 1 year labor. The 10 years parts coverage tells you something about the reliability of the components.
When I was at the corporate headquarters I asked who is the target market for a $6,000 commercial grade residential treadmill. The answer was, “A serious user.” This would be someone who is serious about losing weight or staying in shape and wants the very best. It is also someone who wants to enhance their workout with state-of-the-art interactive technology. The Precor EFX 447 is not only the best elliptical the company sells, it may be the best home elliptical in the industry.
Unquestionably a “Best Buy”
The new and improved Precor EFX 425 replaces the award winning EFX 5.33. There are two features that make the Precor EFX 425 elliptical trainer extremely appealing. First, you have the Precor reputation for excellence. Precor has always been considered one of the most durable elliptical trainers on the market. That is why they are so popular with health clubs. Their commercial models withstand countless hours of daily abuse. You will find that the EFX 425 utilizes many of the design features found on their commercial models, in addition it incorporates many of the same components.
The other feature that solidified Precor’s reputation for one of the very best crosstrainers is the CrossRamp technology. This allows you to adjust the incline of your elliptical stride from 10%-40%. Similar to the ability to adjust the incline on a treadmill. Precor was the first to come up with this concept, and since then many others have tried to duplicate this feature. However, Precor holds the patent on the CrossRamp Technology. Consequently, other companies have an incline that compromises the natural elliptical motion.
Why would you want to incline your elliptical stride? There are two reasons. First, at a steep incline you get an intense workout. It will kick up your cardio exertion in seconds, and you will be able to burn more calories in less time.
Second, by inclining your stride you concentrate the resistance on different parts of your lower body. At the lower levels you generally work all muscle groups, while at a higher incline you specifically target your glutes, quads, and calves. In addition to the ability to adjust the incline you are also able to vary the elliptical stride from 21″ to 21.4″, which gives you even more diversity to your workout. And diversity is important in achieving your fitness goals.
Natural Elliptical Motion — The patented biomechanical design of the EFX 425 allows the elliptical path to perfectly mimic a natural running stride. This allows the exerciser to keep their heels down through all the ranges of motion for a more comfortable and effective ergonomically correct workout.
Console and Display Functions — You get 10 installed workout programs, 10 display metrics and 4 summary metrics. There is also a USB port and a place to plug in headphones.
Two User IDs — If you have multiple users, each can store their own stats for future use on getting the proper feedback from your workout.
Warranty — Lifetime on frame, 10 years on parts, 3 years on console and one year on service. Note that the parts warranty is one of the most generous in the industry, which says something about the durability of the parts.
Heavy Unit Weight — The Precor EFX 425 weighs in at 240 lbs. This makes the machine rock solid, just like their commercial models.
The primary reason you are going to spend so much money on a Precor elliptical is because you are getting the best of the best. Not only will you be able to pass-on this crosstrainer to your next generation, you are also going to get a superior cross training workout. Precor is known for its’ smooth and natural elliptical strides. It has a high comfort zone. Furthermore, the EFX 425 is designed to accommodate individuals of different heights and weights.
So often people get spoiled working out on a Precor at their club. Many will decide to buy a typical residential machine for the home and will find they are disappointed because it isn’t like the Precor they have come accustomed to. That’s because these non Precor ellipticals cannot come close to the durability, stability and the ergonomics of the workout provided by Precor. If you got the money and you want the best, this is a no-brainer.
A home product that feels and looks like the one at the gym but is smaller, lighter and reasonably priced. I tried it at my local fitness store the other day and am going to buy one this week. I think it is even smoother than the one at my gym. Thank you Precor! Keep working on those gym quality machines that will fit in a smaller space at home!

One of the Most Durable Cross Trainers for the Home
The new Precor EFX 225 elliptical trainer replaces the Precor 5.25. It is designed for serious users, multiple users and individuals who want the best in home fitness equipment. For years Precor has received “Best Buy” ratings for their elliptical trainers. They invented the concept of elliptical training, and have been one of the top players in the high-end market ever since.
Their commercial elliptical are a favorite at health clubs and are built to withstand the rigors of that environment. Their residential models are based on their commercial models and are some of the most durable crosstrainers built for the home. Their service issues for new models is a fraction of the industry standard.
The Precor EFX 225 elliptical is their least expensive model that has both the power incline and the upper body workout. Of course, you also get the most natural feeling elliptical strides in the industry.
One of the problems with most elliptical trainers is the fixed elliptical motion. Your lower body goes through the same repetitious stride. Consequently, you workout limited muscles. Precor solved this problem through their patented CrossRamp Technology. Basically, they added the ability to incline the elliptical motion, just like the incline on a treadmill.
The Precor EFX 225 elliptical trainer allows you to adjust the incline from 15 to 25 degrees. In the process you isolate and work your glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves. As you move the ramp up and down you can feel the strain on your different muscles, something that doesn’t happen on a fixed ramp elliptical.
Other brands have been able to get around this patent by coming up with a incline design that has compromises. The Precor CrossRamp technology found on the EFX 225 maintains a true elliptical motion as you raise the incline, the other versions distort the motion when it is inclined, resulting in stress and strain to your joints.
There is no getting around the fact that Precor Elliptical Trainers are expensive. They charge a premium and get it. There are two reasons.
First, their elliptical trainers provide a cardio exercise that mimics the way you move. Consequently, you tend to get more results with a lower perceived rate of exertion. Over the years the company has expended considerably resources on R&D in order to give you the “Precor” workout experience.
Second, as mentioned, the residential ellipticals are a by product of the commercial models. The biomechanic features that have worked so well in commercial environment are utilized on their resisdential models.
Note: All 200 Energy series Precor ellipticals are built in Taiwan, although they still have an exceptional level of quality and durability. Their 400 Precision series are built in the U.S. and utilize many of the same components found in their commercial models. For most, the 200 series is more than adequate and the 400 series can almost be an overkill for residential use.
I’ve always been impressed with Precor products, however, when I recently visited their operation in Woodinville, WA, my respect for the company increased further. The personnel are fanatical about the Precor mission, which is to offer the finest fitness equipment on the planet. The Precor EFX 225 is an example of that fanaticism. It is an extremely durable machine that provides and exceptional crosstraining experience. The kind of experience that will keep you coming back to your machine over and over.
Review of the Precor 5.25, which is now the 225 – A home product that feels and looks like the one at the gym but is smaller, lighter and reasonably priced. I tried it at my local fitness store the other day and am going to buy one this week. I think it is even smoother than the one at my gym. Thank you Precor! Keep working on those gym quality machines that will fit in a smaller space at home!
An Elliptical Brand Unlike Any Other!
The Precor EFX 222 elliptical trainer replaces the Precor 5.23, which was one of their best selling ellipticals. And for a Precor it is reasonably priced at around $2,900. Now some of you may be suffering from sticker shock, but there are numerous individuals who are willing to pay a premium for the Precor quality. In fact, their highest priced residential elliptical triner cost over $6,000.
Why are people willing to pay an excessive amount for a Precor elliptical trainer? Why are people willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a premium Lexus? Because both have a feel you will not find in any of the competitor’s models.
One of the features that makes the Precor EFX 222 so exceptional is their patented CrossRamp technology, where you can adjust the incline of the ramp. By adjusting the ramp you can target different muscle groups and work the glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves. You can also kick up your cardio burn.
What makes the CrossRamp technology on the Precor ellipticals unique is that while you increase the angle you maintain a true elliptical motion — a motion that is natural to the way you move. This technology is protected by a strict patent, and consequently competitor’s must compromise in the design of their incline feature.
However, unlike the higher priced Precor models, with the EFX 222 you have to adjust the ramp manually and you only can adjust to three different positions. When I workout on my elliptical I make constant adjustment, but for others it may not be an issue.
The other feature worth noting on the EFX 222, or any Precor crosstrainer, is the smooth and natural elliptical motion. The rear drive mechanics makes this one of the smoothest machines built. It is also one of the quietest. No matter how hard I pushed the ESF 222 it was virtually silent.
Precor has over 250 patents on their fitness equipment. The company is fanatical in their research and development that is focused on building the most ergonomic crosstrainer in the industry. Furthermore, this R&D results in a crosstraining machine that gives your an efficient workout while you have a lower perceived level of exertion in comparison to other cardio machines.
There are a number of reasons to consider buying the Precor EFX 222 elliptical trainer…
You do need to consider whether the manual incline is an issue, in which case you will want to upgrade to the Precor EFX 225. Regardless which model you choose, you are getting the feel of a Precor elliptical, and that is why people are willing to pay a premium.
The Very Best in Cross Training!
I had the chance to try out a Precor AMT Adaptive Motion Trainer at a health club when I was out of town. The machine I workout on was a heavy duty commercial model. They also sell a residential version called the Precor AMT 835 Adaptive Motion Trainer for a mere $9,000, which is almost an exact duplicate of their commercial model.
So is it worth the price? If you have a spare $9,000 you can spend and you want the very best in cross training equipment, the answer is yes!
When I was in the Seattle area a couple of years ago I had a chance to stop by the Precor corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility, which is an impressive operation. I was given a tour and had the opportunity to meet their head engineer. He is one of the individuals who designed the first elliptical trainers. I left with the impression that Precor is obsessed with quality control, and that the company continually strides to create the most innovative and ergonomic fitness equipment in the industry. The Precor AMT 835 Adaptive Motion Trainer is a perfect example.
What makes the Precor AMT 835 Adaptive Motion Trainer so unique and appealing is that the stride length and height is controlled by your exertion. Your typical elliptical trainer has a set path. Many have incline features that allow you to incline the elliptical stride length, but over all you’re motion is very restricted. Consequently, this limits the benefits when targeting muscle groups.
With the Precor AMT 835 Adaptive Motion Trainer you can change the motion at will. You have an infinite range of stride paths. You can instantly change from short to long strides lengths, or from walking or running. Each workout is customized to your desire. You are not locked into a set motion. With the ability to adjust the length and the height of the stride you can target more muscles. For example, the adaptive motion allows you to do…
The adjustable stride allows you to go from 0”-36” length, and from 6.8”-10” height. In comparison to a standard elliptical trainer you are typically locked into a 20” stride length that can be only be inclined. The overall benefit of the adaptive motion is that you can efficiently burn more calories than typical elliptical trainers.
The Precor AMT 835 comes with dual action so you can also work out your upper body muscles. It has a slick console that shows you the degree of your exertion. It has heart rate monitoring either through the hand grips or through a wireless belt. You can monitor whether you are in a fat burn, calorie burn, or peak performance zone. I should also mention that the AMT 835 weighs a hefty 412 lbs., so the machine is rock solid.
Warranty has only a 1-year labor coverage, which is below the industry standard. However, you get 10-years on parts, which suggest the parts seldom have to be replaced.
So if you are in that upper 1%, or maybe even the upper 3%, and you want the most effective and innovative crosstrainer in the industry, the Precor Amt 835 Adaptive Motion Trainer is your answer. This machine is an example of why Precor is one of the most respected brands in the industry.
Greatest machine ever – I used to use this machine when I went to a different gym. God I love this machine. It’s so amazing. It really does do it all. You can use almost all legs, or you can use almost all arms. You can use it like a stair climber, you can use it as an eliptical, you can use it as one of those goofy things that just swings back and forth. I would never fork out 8 grand for it, but let me tell you its worth the money. This is an amazing machine right on the cutting edge of workout technology.

Beyond the Hype the TreadClimber Gets Results!
With any type of fitness equipment there is going to be some hype. None are hyped more than the BowFlex TreadClimbers. Their commercials run continually and suggest some extraordinary results. And of course they show before and after of select customers, which makes you believe you are going to see miraculous changes.
So if you are considering buying a TreadClimber it is important to separate the hype from the actual benefits. And there are definite benefits to working out on a BowFlex TreadClimber. That is why there are so many positive reviews from customers.
The BowFlex TreadClimber is similar to a treadmill in the sense that you have a running belt that you walk on. But rather than one large belt you have a “dual motion treadle system”. You have two separate belts that move up and down to meet your feet as you walk. In fact, BowFlex claims that the TreadClimber combines the motions of a treadmill, elliptical trainer and stairclimber. You have the belt motion of a treadmill, you workout at an incline like a stairclimber and the belt meets your feet thus reducing the impact like an elliptical.
There is a lot of truth to this claim for several reasons. First, you are walking rather than running and obviously there is less impact and stress when you walk. Second, that treadles rise up to meet you feet so there this further reduces the impact. Finally, you tend to exercise at an incline, which does intensify your workout.
First off few people purchase stair climbers these days, so I do not even know why they compare the two. Regarding the claim that the BowFlex TreadClimber burns 3.5 times more calories than a treadmill. They base that claim with the treadmill at 3.0 mph and “0” incline. If you crank up the speed and the incline you will also burn some serious calories on a treadmill. It really comes down to how much you are willing to exert yourself on either a TreadClimber or a Treadmill.
The BowFlex TreadClimbers definitely have a smaller length than a treadmill and most elliptical trainers. For example, the BowFlex TC100 has a 50.6” length, while the popular Sole F80 treadmill is 80’. So if space is an issue the TreadClimber is appealing.
There is a photo on the BowFlex web site that shows a person on a TreadClimber and there are arrows pointing to the glutes, legs, calves, abs, triceps and back. This photo suggests that the TreadClimber works these various muscles groups, although they do not state that. The TreadClimber obviously works the lower muscles like your legs, calves and glutes. However, it has minimum impact on your upper body. You may get some workout to your abs, since you tend to tighten them as you walk up an incline, but the toning is minimal.
Like a treadmill, the Treadclimber is primarily designed to work the lower body and to give you an efficient cardio workout. It is equally important that you include your TreadClimber workout with strength training in order to build upper body muscles.
TC100 – This is there most popular model and includes a motor. Inclines to 14%, has four LCD readouts for speed, distance, time and calories, tracks one user, 2-year warranty, 4 mph max speed. ($1,999)
TC200 – Same features as the TC100 except, longer treadles, large LCD display with 5 readouts, 3-year warranty, tracks two users, heart rate monitoring, 4.5 max speed, and you get G.O. Coach, a goal oriented technology to assist you in reaching your fitness goals. ($2,999)
What you can expect from the BowFlex TreadClimber…
The BowFlex TreadClimbers are popular for two reasons, because of all the hype, and because they get results. If used regularly with sufficient exertion, you will burn calories and tone your lower body muscles. Overall, the feedback from customers is various positive, and that alone is a good endorsement.
My only suggestion is that you also look at elliptical trainers for three reasons…

CardioCore Technology for a Superior Workout
Due to the popularity of the CardioCore and Variable Motion features found on the Captiva, Yowza Fitness decided to produce a higher end model, called the Yowza Islamorada. I believe all the names are based on beaches in Florida, where the company headquarters are located.
The Islamorado has much of the same technology and design as the Captiva. In fact, our team is one of the few reviewers of elliptical trainers that has actually been on the Yowza products. They are only available online so you can’t go to a retail outlet and test the equipment. Most reviews are just rewrites of the content on the Yowza website.
Yowza Fitness is OUT OF BUSINESS.
We are still waiting to hear more information about this company but it seems they are no longer producing machines.
NOTE: The CardioCore machines are certainly unique, but this company has done less than impress us the past few months. Check out a machine from another recommended company like Sole Fitness insteadThe Yowza Islamorada elliptical trainer assist you in reaching your fitness goals by offering two of the most innovative features that you will find.
CardioCore Motion – Yowza introduced, what I consider, one of most innovative features to come out on an elliptical trainer in a number of years, the CardioCore Motion. Rather than having the standard upper body workout that moves back and forth, the CardioCore Motion gives a left to right twisting motion. There are two advantages over the typical elliptical upper body workout.
The CardioCore targets all of your muscles in the abdominal region and your arms, which most of us want to target. When I first got on the Captiva I noticed instantly the workout in my abs. Your standard elliptical only targets your arm. The CardioCore Motion is similar to twisting my body left and right with weights.
The CardioCore Motion tends to better distribute the resistance. So often with your typical elliptical trainer, people often go through the motions with the upper body workout. They rely on their legs to do most of the work. Consequently, they are getting not getting the full benefits to their upper body.
Variable Motion Elliptical – Many elliptical trainers have an incline feature that allows you to incline the elliptical motion. It has the benefit of offering a more intense workout and targeting more muscles. But as you raise the incline it can cause more stress to your joints and potential knee shear. The Islamorada offer a more inventive approach that is more beneficial.
You have a 19”-30” adjustable stride that varies the motion as you increase the stride, thus the name “Variable Motion”. The motion goes from a traditional elliptical stride to more of a stair stepper path. This variable motion targets more lower body muscles in comparison to a typical elliptical and it reduces stress and strain to your joints.
In addition, it works on the muscle confusion theory. It is common knowledge that repetitive exercising will have limited benefits over time. And with a typical elliptical trainer with a fix stride length, the workout can be very repetitive. The variable motion on the Islamorada gives you a more extensive range of motions and resistances, which helps to prevent your body from getting acclimated to any one particular motion.
IWM Weight Management – You get a Wi-Fi scale and weight management software that allows you to monitor your progress and keep you on track to your fitness goals. By defining your weight goal the IWM will define workouts to achieve that goal. User simply stand on the weight scale prior to exercising, the real time weight will be transferred to the console through Wi-Fi and offer user a unique workout program to burn the right amount of calories per workout.
Pivoting Foot Pedals – Unlike foot pedals that have a fixed angle with the elliptical stride, the pivoting foot pedals found on the Islamorada pedals angle based on the pressure applied. This not reduces stress to your feel, but also limits heal lift.
Soft Gel Pedal – Further reduces the stress and impact to your joints.
Speakers and MP3 Input – The Islamorada is equipped with speakers that produce above average sound in comparison to most elliptical machines. It has a USB port to accommodate both Apple and Android devices.
12 Pre-Set Programs and 9 Custom Programs – You have a decent selection of installed challenges and the ability to create and store 9 custom programs. You also get nine user memory profiles which store the weight, height and sex for each user.
Heart Rate Control – The Yowza Islamorada comes with wireless heart rate control, allowing you to determine your exertion based on your heart rate. This is a method of exercise utilized by many professional athletes.
Eddy Braking System — The commercial grade electro magnetic brake system results in a very smooth elliptical motion and is super quiet. In fact, the system is so durable it is being used in light commercial applications which speaks to the abuse it can withstand.
Warranty – The lifetime frame and braking system and the 2-year labor coverage are fairly standard, but the 5-year parts warranty is above average. Which is a reflection on the durability of the machine.
Low Maintenance – Being a rear drive machine, it is roller less and has less moving parts, consequently requiring less maintenance and service.
The Yowza Islamorada is their most popular model for a number of reasons including…
The feedback I get is that both the Cardio Core Training and the Variable Motion are a big hits with customers. Both these features have taken the crosstrainer concept to the next level. You need to take a “leap of faith” in spending this kind of money on a machine that you never physically tested.
I had the chance to test the Yowza Captiva elliptical trainer when I was at their corporate headquarters. You’ll find that most of the reviews of the Captiva are from individuals who never actually been on this machine.
What makes this unique crosstrainer appealing are two features – Variable Motion & Cardio Core Training. Both which can provide one of the best cross training workouts in the industry.
Yowza Fitness is OUT OF BUSINESS.
We are still waiting to hear more information about this company but it seems they are no longer producing machines.
NOTE: Since Yowza is no longer producing machines, we recommend you check out a machine like the NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE9i instead..Yowza Fitness is the U.S. subsidiary of Greenmaster, which has been manufacturing fitness equipment around the world for the last 28 years. The company has a reputation for building quality products that are low maintenance at a value price. I’ve met the owner on a couple of occasions.
Cardio Core Training Elliptical — The Cardio Core Training is a completely new concept, which you will not find on any other elliptical brand. The builders were looking for a way to both distinguish themselves from the competition, but they also wanted to improve the crosstraining experience.
One of the so-called benefits of an elliptical trainer is the combination upper and lower body workout. As your lower body works the elliptical stride, your upper body is suppose to get resistance training by the back and forth motion of handlebars. At least that is the theory. In reality, most people who work out on an elliptical trainer tend to go through the motions with their upper body. Most of the resistance is absorbed by the leg muscles, while the arms are basically along for the ride. Consequently, there is virtually no toning to your upper body.
Faced with this dilemma, the engineers at Yowza Fitness came up with “Cardio Core Training”. A crosstraining innovation that works your core muscles, also known as your abs. You have two tee-shape handlebar over the console that swings left and right with the motion of the pedals. The design forces your body to constantly twist, and in the process work your abs. It is like doing stomach crunches.
It appears that it does a very good job of not only working and toning your lower body muscles, but also your sartorius and your internal and external obliques. I could also feel how the motion was stretching my back.
On our most recent visit we ask the CEO how successful the Cardio Core Training was? He said they have sold about 13,000 units with this feature. It makes up about 95% of their elliptical business. I also asked how customers have responded to this unique feature? He mentioned that the response has basically been 100% favorable. People really appreciate the benefits of the Cardio Core Training.
Variable Motion Elliptical — Most manufacturers are moving beyond the standard elliptical design with the fix motion, largely because the benefits these machines provide are limited. With the Captiva you get 12 motions that vary from a wide 18″-28″. We’re not talking about just 12 variable elliptical stride lengths, but variable motions designed to work different lower body muscles and improve your cardio exercise.
The first motion is an 18″ relatively flat oval shape stride, where the peak is 2″ higher than the bottom. It is more like a traditional elliptical stride. As you move up the motions your stride increases and you find your lifting your leg up higher towards the front of the stride. That is in comparison to a typical elliptical stride where you have to push down at the top of the stride to keep the motion going, thus putting pressure on your knees. The variable stride goes up to a lengthy 28″, providing a heart pounding workout. At that level it may be one of the most strenuous workouts of any elliptical in the market.
There are two benefits to the variable motion. First, it gives you the ability to work different lower body muscles. In the lower motions you tend to work your quads, while in the higher levels you work your hip flexors, lower back and hamstrings. The second benefit isyou get an intense cardio workout. As you move up the motion levels your heart will start pounding. It is the kind of workout that serious athletes will appreciate.
Electromagnetic (Eddy Current) Braking System — I’m told that the system used in the Captiva is top of the line and is found on many of the high end and commercial elliptical trainers.
Heavy Flywheel — The flywheel is a hefty giving it a very smooth feel. You can tell the difference when you start or stop – the process is gradual.
Sealed Bearings — All the joints have sealed bearing, in comparison to bushings. You would expect it in an elliptical at this price. Sealed bearings wear better and are quiet.
Backlit LCD Display — I see more and more manufacturers using this type of hi-res LCD display in comparison to an LED. It gives a sharp and clear presentation of your feedback data.
3-Speed Fan — Not a costly add-on, but one that is very popular with customers. It gives relief by pointing the breeze directly at your core.
iPod Docking Station and Speakers — They designed the Yowza Captiva with a iPod docking station rather than an MP3 input. This means only Apple devices will work on it. Yowza did this because the docking station provides higher quality audio over the MP3 plug-in. They also used some of the best speaker system you will find on any elliptical trainer. The sound is definitely better than the majority of sound systems that cheap out on their components.
Warranty — Lifetime frame and Braking system, 5-year parts and 2-year in home labor coverage.
SureFit Pedals with Soft Gel Inserts — The pedals pivot with the elliptical motion, which significantly reduces any heal lift. In addition, you can actually push down on the pedal and it will give. That is because It sits on bushings so like a treadmill it absorbs shock from the impact of pressing down on the pedal. According to the company…
“Our patented feature includes two cushioned gel foot pads spaced a perfect 5 1/2” apart to allow for the most biomechanically designed placement and movement. Your knees never extend out over your feet, your heel is always down and the force needed to create movement is evenly distributed and grounded. Each pad is anchored to our articulating pedal system that allows each foot pad to rock forward and backward intuitively throughout the elliptical motion. This creates the most comfortable and stress free design available in the market.“
The Yowza Captiva is one of the most innovative elliptical trainers on the market. With the Variable Motion and the Cardio Core Training, this elliptical takes cross training to a whole new level.
The Yowza Captiva is a crosstrainer that not only provides an intense cardio workout, but also works more muscle groups than potentially any other elliptical on the market. In particular, it targets your abs, and we all want firmer abs.
In testing the Captiva it seems very durable, solid and stable. In fact, it weighs a hefty 228 lbs. It comes with large wheels for moving, but this is the type of equipment you will probably want to leave in place. I was told the service issues have been minimal.
One more thing to mention. We’ve noticed that Yowza (the company) has undergone several changes in this last year. Things do not operate as smoothly as they used to which makes us a little nervous about their level of customer care. You may want to look at some other options like the NordicTrack SpaceSaver SE9i before making your selection.
A Solid Machine with Core Benefits
The Yowza Miami elliptical trainer is their top of the line model and their biggest seller. It comes with Yowza Fitness signature features including their proprietary Cardio Core rotating handle bars combined with electronic adjustable Variable Motion along with other upgrades designed to keep you on your fitness goal track. This is a heavy duty machine and when I talked to the company they mentioned many of their customers purchased for multiple users. And of course a machine that can accommodate multiple users is typically very durable. In fact they are selling this unit in light commercial environments.
Note: We have been to the Yowza Fitness headquarters and personally tested their machines. We are one of a few reviewers that have actually been on their equipment. Also, we realize this is a rather lengthy review, but the depth is necessary to adequately explain the many unique features.
Yowza Fitness is OUT OF BUSINESS.
We are still waiting to hear more information about this company but it seems they are no longer producing machines.
NOTE: You would be better off checking out a model from another company. Start with Sole Fitness.Cardio Core Training
The Cardio Core Training has redefined crosstrainers. A typical elliptical trainer has your side handlebars that move forward and back. They provide resistance training to your upper body, but target limited muscles. The Cardio Core Training has handlebars that swing side to side. The design forces you to twist your torso, which results in targeting your abs and core. As you get your cardio exercise you are also getting an upper body workout similar to doing sit-up and crunches. In comparison a traditional elliptical trainer upper body workout tends to primarily target your shoulders and arms, with minor impact to your abs and core.
An upgrade on the Yowza Miami is a set of moving handle bar with patented egg shape holder to provide better upper body and core training. You can grip the handlebars in multiple positions, which allows you to target more upper body muscles. Also the handlebars independently self pivot allowing the user to keep their wrists in a fix position instead of having to twist your wrists as the handlebars go from side to side.
The other signature feature on the Yowza Miami elliptical is the Variable Motion. Rather than having a fixed elliptical stride length you have a variety of motions that go from 18”-32”. At 18” you have a more traditional elliptical motion, as you extend the stride length the motion becomes more like a stair climber. As your stride goes further out it also goes further up. At the longer stride lengths the best analogy is that you are combining an elliptical motion with a stair climber.
The Yowza Miami is upgraded with a longer stride length and an increased incline. The 60% incline provides a longer stride range and lifts the legs higher for better performance. The higher the knees the more workout to the abs and core.
Advantages of the Variable Motion
Over time the body adapts and will acclimate to any repetitive exercise you do. So when you have, for example, an elliptical with a fixed 20” stride length and an incline of 15 degrees. You will initially get the benefits of weight loss and muscle toning, but that repetitive motion will reduce the rewards over time. The Yowza Miami elliptical trainer capitalizes on the muscle confusion theory, whereby changing the shape and intensity of the motion helps to prevent your body from getting acclimated to any one particular motion.
The other advantages of the variable motion is that with the variable stride and incline it can accommodate many different body types and sizes. That is why the Yowza Miami elliptical trainer is popular with household of two or more users.
Note: To maximize your workout it is recommended that you do a 60% vs. 40% split, where your legs handle 60% of the resistance and your arms and upper body handles the other 40%.
Large Flywheel
The Yowza Miami elliptical trainer has the heaviest flywheel of all the Yowza ellipticals. The Electromagnetic Braking system (referred to as Eddy Current) makes for a smoother and more natural motion and is one of the most innovative braking systems available .
Best Brake Control Friction System Available — The electromagnetic brake system is commercial grade and will result in a very smooth elliptical motion, in addition to being whisper quiet. In fact, on our recent visit to Yowza the CEO said this machine is now being used in light commercial environments which speaks of the long term durability.
Sealed Bearings — All the joints have sealed bearings in comparison to bushings. Sealed bearings last much longer and quieter than bushings and something you would expect in a machine at this price level.
IWM (Intelligent Weight Management)
The Yowza Miami comes with a Bluetooth digital weight scale with Intelligent Weight Management software. You weigh yourself before each workout and the data is fed to the machine and tracked by the software. This feature is designed to assist you in achieving your ideal weight or your targeted weight. IWM allows the Yowza Miami elliptical trainer to monitor your weight and create custom workout routines to achieve your designated weight loss. For example with IWM you can monitor calories burned, monitor calories you eat, and find out at the end of the day if you are in a positive or negative calorie status.
The Miami tracks up to nine users, so the IWM can be customized for each. It also includes the myLiveLight app which allows you to monitor all your stats and your progress online.
Pivoting Foot Pedals with Soft Gel
The angled pedals rest on cushioned buffers and flex back and forth based on the pressure from your foot. This reduces foot lift and stress and strain to your feet and eliminates “toe sleep”. The Soft Gel technology further reduces the stress and impact to your joints (Gees you would think all manufacturers have gel inserts in the pedal standard like Yowza).
Sound System
The Miami is equipped with a Bluetooth 4.0 fit-sound system that is build into console to allow you play music from your Bluetooth mobile device. A cable input is available for non Bluetooth devices. This sound system is above average for an elliptical trainer. There is even a large button to answer an incoming call (like in your car) without having to touch your phone.
Unit Weight
At 234 lbs and combined with the rear drive design, the Yowza Miami is rock solid and very stable even for excessive heavy users. It can easily handle it’s maximum user weight of 400 lbs.
Large LCD Display
The Yowza Miami Elliptical trainer has an oversized LCD screen, and there are two separate LED screen that display incline and resistance levels.
Warranty and Service
You get lifetime warranty on frame & braking system, and 2 years in home labor. In addition, the parts warranty is increased to 7 years. This coverage suggests a very durable machine. In fact, out of 330 reviews on consumer affairs Yowza has a rating of 4.5 stars. Higher than any other company. The next closest company is Nordic Track with 244 reviews and only 1 star. That is correct, one star.
The price tag on the Yowza Miami elliptical trainer is hefty for a residential crosstrainer, but for the money you are getting…
From the feedback I get, those who take the leap of faith on this innovative machine are hooked. That is because the Yowza Miami elliptical trainer delivers results.
