Bowflex MAX Trainers

The MAX Trainers combine the motion of a stair climber with an elliptical trainer.  There are no moving belts on this machine so it will remind you a lot more of a typical elliptical.  The upright design lets you combine the benefits of its two root machines with High Intensity Interval Trainer (HIIT).

Bowflex Elliptical PedalsHere are the main benefits of the Max Trainers from Bowflex:

  • Combination elliptical trainer and stairclimber.
  • Interval training – Transition easily from high to low intensity to maximize your workout.
  • Easy to mount/dismount – This machine is easier to step onto than a traditional rear-drive elliptical.
  • Compact design – The MAX Trainers have a length of around 46″ so it will save you space over the longer traditional elliptical designs.
  • Easy to assembSle – Customers report that it doesn’t take an advanced degree to assemble this machine.
  • 3 model options – The MAX Trainers come in model options so you can get the right features for your goals and budget.

Features of Bowflex MAX Trainers

Levels of Resistance

The level of resistance is a crucial factor for a fitness machine to help challenge you during your workout and help reach your goals. The M6 has 16 levels of resistance, while the M9 and the Max Total 16 have 20 levels.

Heart Rate Tracker

Monitoring heart rates, especially while exercising, is important because our heart rate increases during workouts. The M6 and M9 Max Trainers have contact grip heart-rate monitoring. The Max Total 16 also offers contact-grips, in addition to Bluetooth enabled heart rate monitoring with a heart rate armband included.

Bowflex JRNY

Bowflex Max TrainerThe BowFlex JRNY platform is now on all of the Max Trainer models.  This is a new interactive fitness technology that tailors exercises to your goals and physical abilities. As your fitness levels and physical stamina change, these routines will adapt with you. There’s also a fitness monitoring and incentive program, as well as a collection of professional fitness trainer-led videos. It’s critical to remember that this is a subscription model. *Note: At the time of this review, the M6, M9, and Max Total 16 models come with a 1-year membership to JRNY ($149 value). After the free trial, JRNY access is $19.99/month.

Display

The touchscreens on the Bowflex Max Trainers offer great quality to access your workout stats, or view your Bowflex JRNY membership. The M6 has a backlit screen, the M9 has a 10″ touchscreen, and the Max Total 16 has a large 16″ HD touchscreen.

Warranty

The Max Trainers from Bowflex don’t have the best warranties. They all come with 3-years coverage on frame and parts, 1-year on electronics, and 90 days on labor. We have noticed that better warranties typically come from machines that are more durable, so it’s worth noting that these machines have a sub-par warranty.

The Max Trainers all come with a lot of cool features. However, despite slight variations in specifications, there is a big variation in costs. In terms of value, we still think that the M9 Max Trainer is the best option overall. If screen size is important to you, it would be worth the splurge to upgrade to the Max Total 16.

One of the main competition options for the MAX Trainer machines is the HIIT Trainer series from ProForm. Check out our ProForm review to learn more.

A Strong Reputation for Quality

spirit elliptical trainer reviewI recently had the opportunity to test out the new Spirit elliptical trainers at Superior Fitness Systems in Cary, NC. Spirit is best known for creating the concept of wireless heart rate control. They have been in the treadmill business for a number of years, and until recently were building their machines in Arkansas.

I actually had dinner with the founder of the company. He sold out about three years ago to Dyaco International. In the process their treadmills went from being rather boring to extremely stylish. They entered the elliptical business about two years ago.

As with most American fitness equipment companies that transferred their manufacturing to China, the first generation of products had problems. Those issues have been worked out, and now Spirit is once again making quality treadmills and elliptical trainers.

Like so many other fitness companies, Spirit is relatively new to the elliptical trainer business. But they have a reputation for building solid and durable treadmills, and those design techniques appear to be applied to the construction of their ellipticals.

I had just come from Dick’s Sporting Goods, where I tested a Sole Elliptical Trainer. It was difficult to tell the difference between the two brands. And since they are both built by Dyaco, it is obvious that they are basically the same machines being sold to different retail segments. You’ll find Sole at large sporting goods merchants, while Spirit ellipticals are sold through the fitness specialty store. You will get a better deal at the larger sporting stores, while the fitness stores have more knowledgeable employees.

I asked the salesperson about the Spirit Ellipticals. He mentioned that the Spirit appealed to the shopper who wanted quality, but couldn’t afford the big ticket price of the Precor (They had 6 Precor models.) I asked about the service record. He said that with the first few machines that came in there was some minor squeaking that was easily fixed. Since then they were relatively problem free.

Fitness Source Spirit Elliptical Trainer Review

I tested both the Spirit XE295 and the Spirit XE400. Each had a very smooth elliptical motion and was very quiet. They appear to use a heavy flywheel, that was apparent when you stopped the machine and gradually slowed down. The XE400 has a foot pedal angle adjustment feature. You have the ability to angle the pedal up about 5 degrees. The logic behind this design is that not everyone walks the same, and some tend to walk with an inward slope.

Like the Sole elliptical, the Spirit has a 20″ stride length, which makes the elliptical motion very comfortable. I can’t imagine how some companies sell 14″ or 16″ strides, and then suggest they can accommodate people over 6′ tall. The Spirit and Sole ellipticals utilize four wheels, rather than two, on the rear rails. These are the wheels that ride back and forth with the elliptical motion. You can tell the difference. It provides for a very stable feel, and reduces side to side foot pedal motion. This is a feature generally found on more expensive models.

Overall, I would say that the Spirit ellipticals are a good value, as are Sole. One difference is in the warranty. On most models Spirits has a 10 year parts and 1 year labor warranty. The parts coverage is very generous. Sole offers a 5 year parts and 2 year labor warranty, and the 2-years service coverage is also generous.

So which should you buy? If you are going to buy online I would purchase a Sole elliptical from their site. They have good prices that include shipping, and best of all you save on taxes. If you are going to buy locally you may want to purchase a Spirit from a fitness specialty store. You get their expertise and they will give you personal attention. But check out the local Dick’s and compare prices.

Be Cautious with this Company…

Yowza EllipticalYowza was a small company located in Florida that used to be at the top of our recommendation lists.  However, lately, we’ve noticed some troubling things from Yowza.  It seems like the company wasn’t what it used to be and we no longer felt confident in recommending their products.  Now, it seems, they’ve gone completely OUT OF BUSINESS.  You’d be better off going with a more stable brand like NordicTrack, ProForm, Sole, or Bowflex.

The Yowza Elliptical was manufactured in Taiwan, which is a very important factor as it’s where most high-end elliptical trainers are now built. Practically all fitness equipment is now built overseas, primarily in China and Taiwan. However, there tends to be a real difference between the quality control of the two locations.

Yowza Fitness is OUT OF BUSINESS.

We are still waiting to hear more information about this company but it seems they are no longer producing machines.

NOTE:  We’d recommend you go with a more stable brand like NordicTrack, ProForm, Sole, or Bowflex

Learn about the patented Cardio Core Training and the Variable Stride technology.

Cardio Core Training

Yowza EllipticalWhat has really distinguished a Yowza Elliptical from the competition is their innovative Cardio Core technology. They refer to it as a counter rotational core motion. Unlike the usual upper body handlebars that go back and forth with the elliptical motion, you have a two T-shape handlebars that swing left and right with the pedal motion. This simulates a twisting motion as you work out and seriously targets your stomach muscles.

Most elliptical trainer manufacturers claim their machines work both the upper and lower body. This is just NOT true. The majority of the resistance is absorbed by the lower body, while the upper body goes along for the ride.

Yowza Fitness Elliptical Trainer ConsoleWith the Cardio Core design the motion is similar to doing stomach crunches on the ground. You really feel it in your abs.

This is one one of the only ellipticals available that actually works your upper and lower body. AND it’s the only crosstrainer that specifically targets, strengthens and trims your stomach muscles!

When I first used the Cardio Core feature it felt a bit awkward, since I’m used to the typical dual handlebar motion. However, after awhile I got into the swing of the counter rotational motion and found my rhythm. Now, if I owned one of these machines, I probably would alternate between using the Cardio Core handlebars and using the stationary handlebars. I’m not sure you can maintain the Cardio Core handlebars for extended periods unless you look like the model on their site!

Over the last couple of years the ellipticals with the Cardio Core Training has been their hottest selling items. In fact, Joe Alter, President of Yowza recently said they’ve sold around 10,000 units with Cardio Core and that they make up about 95% of their sales.

Considering you cannot go to a local store and try out these ellipticals, I asked if there have been any people that were dissatisfied with the Cardio Core feature. Since it’s such a different motion than people are used to. Joe mentioned that customers have been overwhelmingly positive about this new technology. You can find the Cardio Core training on the following models:

Variable Motion

With the Variable Motion feature you have 12 different motions that start at 18″, and depending on the model, increase up to 32″. As you move up the levels of motion you go from a standard elliptical stride to a motion that forces you to raise your legs. There are a number of benefits to the Variable Motion:

  1. The higher the level the more intense of a cardio workout you get.
  2. It breaks-up the repetitive motion you typically get reducing strain on joints.
  3. It allows you to target different lower body muscles.
  4. It accommodates users of different size and height.
  5. It capitalizes on the muscle confusion theory. Changing the shape and intensity of the motion helps to prevent your body from getting acclimated to any one particular motion.

You can find the Variable Motion feature on the following models:

Other Features

Rear Drive Design — There is a controversy over which is a better design – front or rear.  The advantage to the rear drive design is that there are less moving parts.  One of the disadvantages of a front design is that the pedals run on wheels over railings.  The wheels can wear and the railings can rust resulting in obnoxious noises.  I lubricate my front drive elliptical regularly.

Sure Fit Pedals — The Yowza Elliptical has a unique sure fit pedal design, which not only pivots with the motion, but it has a rubber shock absorption to minimize the impact. This is a really great pedal!

Built-in Fan — The fans are directed at your core where they can do the most good.

Speakers and either iPod Docking Station or BlueTooth — Speakers with MP3 input is becoming standard on elliptical trainers, although many manufacturers use very cheap components and drivers. Joe Alter made it a point to tell me that they installed quality products in their sound system. The Yowza Miami utilizes Bluetooth 4.0.

Sealed Bearings — The Yowza elliptical has a sealed bearing at the pivotal points. There are no bushings, which are more likely to wear out.

Sold Factory Direct — I know, countless manufacturers claim to sell factory direct and they do.  The problem is they also sell through third parties, like large sporting goods chains or fitness specialty stores. Consequently, they cannot undersell their retailers. And the retailers have to set a price that covers the cost of the machine, their overhead and provides a profit. Yowza is a pure play factory direct seller. They only sell through the Internet and directly to the end user.

New! Hybrid Exercise Bike and Elliptical Trainer — For those that have trouble standing while exercising or struggle with an elliptical, Yowza developed the Naples. This machine allows you to site and still get an intense workout and includes the cardio training. See our complete review.

Our Review of the Yowza Elliptical

Back when I went out to see the new line-up of Yowza ellipticals, I was expecting to see your typical run of the mill machines. However, what I saw was a series of ellipticals that were as good, and often better in quality than the competition. More importantly, I saw innovative features that were very exciting and appealing.

In the four years that Yowza Fitness has been selling ellipticals, their products have had a very impressive service record. While their models with the Cardio Core Training have proven to be very successful and popular with their customers.

However, recent issues with the company make us question the service you’ll receive from Yowza now-a-days.  You would be better off going a more stable brand like NordicTrack, ProForm, Sole, or Bowflex.Yowza Elliptical

NordicTrack Elliptical Review

The modern era, with its vast array of gadgets and the fact that almost anything and everything is now available at the click of a button, has restricted the leisure exercise of moving about quite a bit. We consume junk food and maintain a poor lifestyle without ever breaking a single bead of sweat in an effort to burn it off. This ill practice has made individuals more vulnerable to various lifestyle disorders that are both life-threatening and lethal.

Regular exercise and movement of the body are the only solutions to escape from these lethal diseases. But here, too, a problem occurs when it comes to the unavailability of spacious surroundings in our home to carry on the workout process. We might go for a run, but it never helps in keeping our bodies fit in a scientific way. Also, if you want to pay special attention to exercising a particular body part, running or walking may not help. So, here comes the usefulness of fitness equipment.

We use fitness equipment to further consolidate the benefits of any exercise by offering fixed or adjustable degrees of resistance. Fitness equipment plays a major role in enhancing the experience or result of an exercise regimen too.

Why NordicTrack?

Since nowadays, people are more inclined to fitness equipment-based exercises, many companies have started manufacturing them to gain a huge amount of profit. However, very few of them are actually beneficial to delivering a fruitful result. If we end up using faulty gym equipment, there can be numerous unhealthy consequences. We may suffer from an ankle injury, head and neck injuries, knee or hand injuries, etc. So, it is important to go with a trustworthy manufacturer when it comes to purchasing fitness equipment.

NordicTrack, being the largest exercise equipment manufacturer, has been able to gain global customer support and trust. Icon Fitness manages and operates NordicTrack since it is a part of them. The company’s business record says that it has been able to close over a billion sales worldwide. So, who can we trust more than NordicTrack with fitness equipment?

Reasons to Consider NordicTrack Ellipticals

NordicTrack manufactures one of the best elliptical trainers in the world. An elliptical trainer, also known as a cross-trainer, is a piece of stationary workout equipment. This fitness equipment possesses multidimensional uses, including climbing, strolling, jogging, etc. If we perform these activities without using any elliptical machine, there are chances of getting impact injuries due to joint strain. However, an elliptical reduces the chances of getting injuries. People with certain ailments can use an elliptical to keep in shape because of the minimal impact.

The NordicTrack elliptical not only ensures the best quality but also issues top-notch warranty facilities. The customer service provided by NordicTrack is also unquestionably well-driven. If a customer faces any issue with a NordicTrack elliptical, they can call customer service to receive prompt action. This is the same parent company that manufactures ProForm ellipticals. Hence, we can come across comparable models between these two companies.

NordicTrack ellipticals have controlled the $800-$3,000 pricing range in the past few years. NordicTrack has been able to hit such a huge milestone by providing innovative and long-lasting items at a reasonable price. We have visited their outlets and facilities in Logan, Utah, multiple times to evaluate and assess their latest models and speak with the folks who produce them. This is what we’ve discovered:

The Perks of NordicTrack Ellipticals

Reasonable Prices

Any product needs to be priced economically so that a large base of customers can get access to it. It also helps in better sales for the company. When it comes to fitness equipment, things are generally highly-priced. However, NordicTrack ensures better gym equipment at a very economical price as compared to its competitor companies. This strategy has also enabled Icon to sell 4 million pieces of workout equipment in the preceding year.

Speakers with Auxiliary Input

Most ellipticals include speakers, although the sound quality is not satisfactory. NordicTrack’s equipment comes with some of the highest-quality speakers and top-notch sound systems available.

Customizable Foot Pedals

NordicTrack Ellipticals let users modify the angle of foot pedals as per their convenience. This feature is one of the top requisites to carry on an ergonomic exercise practice. This helps to minimize the strain and stress exerted on the feet and ankles. It plays a major role in reducing the chance of leg injury.

Top-Notch Quality Control

Looking back over the years, it is clear that the company has been constantly improving the quality of their products. This aspect has made a significant contribution to the overall transformation of the product lines. This company not only offers the best quality materials but also ensures generous warranties. The products are long-lasting, cost-effective, and require minimal maintenance.

Reliable Customer Service

The past records specify that there were multiple complaints against the NordicTrack customer service. The complaints mainly focus on the unresponsive customer service provided by the company customer service. The first time we paid our first visit to their corporate offices in 2007, we grabbed the opportunity to meet the service head of their customer service department, Dan Jones. He informed us that the company was planning to allocate millions of dollars to improve the service offered by the customer care department.

The company has kept its promise. Since then, the number of service difficulties has decreased considerably. We have been quite amazed by their enhanced level of customer service since 2016.

Smart HD Touchscreen

Several NordicTrack models come with a 7′′–10′′ full HD touchscreen. It provides users with complete access and visibility to all of iFit’s interactive features. These features help to smooth out the functionalities of the products by different means. It is vital to provide user-friendly features to help the customer understand the product better. The full HD touchscreen incredibly helps in building that seamless experience.

iFit Technology Innovation

It is important for a company to invest in research and development to improve their product quality according to people’s demands. When customers use a product, there is always positive and negative feedback. So, gathering that data and analyzing it helps in building the next products in a more practical way to solve the existing issues. NordicTrack is a company that spends and invests a lot in research and development.

This leads to many fruitful results. iFit technology is one such innovation that has resulted in developing many newer features for fitness equipment. It is a motivating tool that connects your elliptical trainer to the Internet. There are several intriguing features. But the following few require special mention.

Exercise Anywhere In The Globe With Google Maps

When we exercise, we not only focus on improving our physical strength but also try to improve our mental health. The current busy lifestyle does not let us grab the time to exercise in outer space. However, it is possible to invite outer space into our interior workout area with the NordicTrack-built iFit technology. This technology is well-suited to allow us to work out almost anywhere on the planet.

iFit technology is designed to trace a path on the computer using Google maps. The resistance and strength on the elliptical will replicate the terrain or landscape. So, despite being at home, we will experience the beauty of working out in the lap of nature with the help of this technology.

If we want to see how our exercise is progressing, we can use Google Maps’ street, satellite, or earth view features. This would require us to use a laptop or a smartphone. Android users would get to use a variety of models. This would allow the user to get access to Google Maps right on the dashboard.

HD Videos

To improve our exercise routine, we need a motivating factor. HD videos offer tempting scenery around the world to help you get into a vigorous workout routine. The video’s speed is determined by how quickly you move. Your elliptical machine’s incline/decline or height is automatically adjustable.

Personalized Workout Plans

Many of us find exercising difficult because we struggle to create a perfect workout routine based on our goals. However, the iFit technology puts an end to this hustle! This technology enables us to establish a personalized account and set fitness objectives. Suppose, a customer has a goal of losing 10 pounds in three months.

He or she needs to create a personal account on iFit.com, stating the goal and adding related information. iFit Live will generate a tailored exercise program to help the customer accomplish his or her target based on the input. We generally tend to start our exercise vigorously and end up feeling tired. So, we can not stick to the routine for a very long time. However, the tailored program set by iFit technology starts with minimal exercises and gradually increases the intensity to help you cope with the workout routine.

Jillian Michaels created some of the top-notch routines. The software appointed by the iFit technology controls the elliptical trainer’s resistance and slopes. This feature also includes a voice coaching facility for elevating exercise motivation. The best part of this technology involves reflecting the users’ achievements statistics on the iFit.com account. So, it is way easier to keep track of the progress to achieve the fitness goal. If someone is lagging behind, they can revise their workout routine using the statistics. Also, if someone makes it possible to maintain the desirable statistics, this can be a big motivating factor for them.

Note: This functionality is available at an extra fee. If the equipment lacks Smart HD Touchscreen, you will need to employ a laptop or smartphone to receive an engaging full color display. Many NordicTrack Ellipticals now come with a 30-day free trial to iFit.

FreeStride Trainers

FS10i bodyIf our goal is to exercise vigorously while concentrating on the lower body muscles, this feature should be one of the top priorities. NordicTrack has launched the FreeStride trainer that serves this purpose in a way more productive way than any other piece of equipment. The FreeStride Trainer has a configurable stride length of 32 inches. We can even use a stair stepper, an elliptical, or a treadmill to hype up the workout.

The special design lets us enjoy strenuous exercise while focusing on the lower body muscles. We get to see this fitness equipment in different gyms and clubs. However, NordicTrack now offers them for home exercise purposes too. Starting at $2,499, these trainers are among NordicTrack’s best-selling models. NordicTrack Brand Reviews can also enlighten us on that fact.

          S60 Suspension Elliptical

Vision Fitness S60 Suspension Elliptical™ Trainer | Elliptical MachineThe S60 Suspension Elliptical is self-powered and can support a user weight of up to 400 pounds. It has a lifetime frame warranty, 7 years warranty for parts, and 2 years for labor. This elliptical is supposed to be more accessible than the others. However, rather than being more accessible, it seems to just offer fewer features than the other models without making things less expensive. For example, it doesn’t have an adjustable stride length.

          Some of its features are:

          • Stride Length – 21″
          • Pedal Type – Oversized with rubber inserts
          • Pedal Spacing – 2″
          • Handlebar Type – Standard foam grips
          • Water bottle holder
          • Reading rack

What to Expect with Vision Fitness?

Investing in fitness equipment is not just about the product. Once you buy the product, you realize how helpful it is to have a brand ethic that is supportive and helpful. In case of any troubleshooting or maintenance needs, or if you find any problems in your machine, you will want to have available customer support and accessible maintenance. Vision Fitness has good customer service. As a whole, Vision Fitness as a brand has certain features that we found to be worth mentioning.

          1. Vertical Integration – Vision Fitness manufactures its own machine parts instead of getting its parts from outside parties. This results in more integrated machines and easier maintenance.
          2. Strong Customer Service – We actually visited the customer call center at the headquarters in Wisconsin. We found that their customer service is taken seriously and that they dedicate a lot of attention to the queries and needs of their customers.
          3. Company Culture – Johnson Fitness, the company that makes Vision Fitness Ellipticals, treats its employees well and maintains a positive company culture. There were fitness centers for employees as well as wellness programs.

We visited different fitness equipment stores and spoke to the sales representatives and general managers to get a better idea about the products. The general feedback we got was positive in the sense that the machines are low maintenance.

However, apart from these positive brand attributes, the actual machines were quite disappointing on the whole. We were expecting better from this brand. While Vision Fitness has a longstanding brand reputation, it does not seem to be living up to that reputation in terms of the actual features of its machines and the pricing they come with.

While there seemed to be a lot of advanced features, they were pretty much just more complicated versions of basic features that you find on most fitness machines. They seemed to make the process more cumbersome in just figuring out what is what. For example, having 3 LED windows or having the option to stream entertainment are features that don’t really up the quality or the overall fitness experience while you workout. They also increase the price and make you pay more for all those features.

Even the supposedly more accessible model that is the S60 suspension model just seems to have fewer features while continuing to be expensive. We would have liked to have found a model that offered the important features without all the extras and allowed the user to focus on their exercise without having to focus so much on the elliptical.

Our Take on Vision Fitness Ellipticals

We found that Vision Fitness as a brand has positive indicators like good customer support and vertical integration. In terms of their machines, the suspension ellipticals are what they are known for. As of the present, most of their models are suspension ellipticals. We found that the suspension ellipticals make for a quiet workout and in this way bring about a smoother experience. They also have some good features like an adjustable stride and a decent flywheel.

Vision Fitness used to offer commercial ellipticals as well as ellipticals for home and residential use. However, the website now shows only the regular use ellipticals and no commercial ones. Other models might still be selling on e-retail platforms.

Some of the features we liked when we tried out their machines were the adjustable strides and the suspension ellipticals. The warranties were also decent and the machines seemed reasonably durable, though not as solid as more quality brands.

Apart from these features, we found that there were not many features that made their machines stand out to us, as compared to other fitness brands that offer many useful features along with quality and durability. We also found that some of the models had a lot of extra features that were complex but not always very useful. If you want certain good features, you have to buy a complex model and pay a lot for extra features like entertainment.

The models are pricey and don’t seem to offer you your money’s worth. It would have been good if they had different kinds of models – some more advanced and some more basic with more accessible features.

          A Reliable Alternative: Horizon Fitness

If you are looking for better features along with quality and durability, you could consider Horizon Fitness. It’s a great brand that comes with a reliable reputation. Like Vision Fitness Ellipticals, Horizon Fitness makes its own components for its ellipticals. This vertical integration of Horizon’s manufacturing process is helpful in terms of maintenance and troubleshooting in case there is a problem with the machine functioning or any of its parts.

Horizon ellipticals are professionally engineered and designed for suitable body positioning. The pedals are spaced apart in such a way that they minimize stress on the hips and back. Horizon also provides a Digital Pass which allows you to save a lot of money on fitness applications like Peleton, Daily Burn, and Studio. These applications are all integrated with Horizon ellipticals.

The machines offer space for taller people too – they have long and comfortable strides. Working out on these machines feels like you are running or brisk walking because the strides are more natural and less restrictive.

Horizon Fitness EX59 EllipticalWhat’s more, Horizon also offers reasonably priced models that don’t compromise on quality and comfort. Its best-selling model is the Ex-59 Elliptical, which seems to be doing really well. It’s affordable without making you give up on good features. The thing about this model is that it is simple to use because of its intuitive controls.

Yet, it’s also got solid components and a durable make. These machines are built to last. They also have convenient additions like a holder for your device, a USB port, and a Bluetooth connection. They’ve got some great warranties that will keep you covered for the long run.

Final Take on Vision Fitness Ellipticals

Vision Fitness Ellipticals offer some good features like suspension ellipticals that make for a smoother experience. It’s also nice that these machines don’t make too much noise and allow for a more silent workout. They also have some good features like an adjustable stride and a decent flywheel. They also have some good customer service which is always a plus point. When buying the product, you may not realize it but once you start using it, you will see how important it is to have available customer support.

However, the features don’t really make them stand out when compared to other brands that offer better features for lower prices, like Horizon Fitness. The machines are expensive without offering models that are less expensive and fancy and more accessible.

There are better options that are budget-friendly like Horizon. These brands also offer great warranty protection that is worth paying for so that you safeguard your money and peace of mind.

Using fitness equipment to exercise helps you get into the zone and up your workout game. We cannot underestimate the importance of supportive fitness equipment that makes the workout experience more accessible and convenient. That’s why it’s so important to have equipment that supports you and provides a steady and stable experience while you push yourself to do your best.

In the hectic lives, we live these days, it’s a feat to just get down to doing that workout and making the time for it regularly. You don’t want to make that even harder for yourself by making the workout experience cumbersome and complicated. You want an experience that rewards you for the effort and energy that you are putting in without demanding more effort from you in just figuring it out and getting started.

To keep up your fitness, you need to find ways to make yourself exercise more regularly. A great way to do this is to get the right fitness equipment. It needs to be the kind of equipment that makes the process of working out comfortable but is also inviting and accessible. The more difficult it seems, the less likely you are to go ahead and do that workout. Horizon ellipticals are easy to get started and this makes you want to work out when you see the machines.

Horizon Fitness offers an affordable, comfortable and intuitive model that is a reliable option, irrespective of where you are on your fitness journey. It’s a much better value for your money as compared to the Vision Fitness Ellipticals. If you are looking to make a sensible buy that will not give you cause for regret, it’s worth considering the Horizon Fitness ellipticals.

          Impressive Design and Ergonomics

AFG Elliptical Trainer ReviewAFG elliptical trainers are built by Johnson Fitness, one of the largest fitness equipment companies in the world.  I had a chance to visit their U.S. headquarters out of Madison WI, and I was impressed with not only their products but their operation.

Johnson Fitness also builds Horizon and LiveStrong fitness equipment.  They were investing considerable effort in the LiveStrong brand, but things got complicated.  For those not familiar with the LiveStrong name, it was a charity focused on fighting cancer and was started by Lance Armstrong, the legendary Tour de France winner/cheater.  Johnson worked out a deal where they would sell treadmills, elliptical trainers and exercise bikes under the LiveStrong brand and give a portion of the profits to the LiveStrong Foundation.

It sounded like a winning proposition until the LiveStrong brand got blind sided with the Lance Armstrong doping scandal.  In particular the LiveStrong fitness products took a hit.  Meanwhile Johnson Fitness was promoting the AFG brand and selling through certain outlets.  Apparently they have decided to drop the LiveStrong brand.

What they did is basically took many of the LiveStrong elliptical trainers and renamed them under the AFG name.   There are some differences in the components and engineering, but overall they are very similar.  And that is a good thing, because I was generally impressed the design and ergonomics of the LiveStrong ellipticals.

          Independent AFG Elliptical Trainer Reviews

In fact, a couple of the AFG elliptical trainers received the impressive reviews from a popular consumer magazine.  The AFG 3.1AE l elliptical trainer was rated a “Best Buy” and in the review they gave it an “Excellent” for construction.  The higher price AFG 18.1 XT elliptical trainer received a “Recommended” rating.

          AFG Elliptical Trainer SIXstar Certification™

When I visited the Johnson Fitness headquarters they impressed upon me the thought process that went into the AFG elliptical trainer.  The company did considerable research to determine what makes people buy ellipticals, and the feel was the number one factor. They researched further and determined what it was about the feel and came up with their SIXstar Certification™.  Here are some of the design features based on that research…

ZeroGap Pedal Distance – Pedals are placed with zero distance between them to eliminate stress on hips and back. Pedals that are too far apart can particularly be stressful to woman because of their physical make-up. With the LiveStrong ellipticals you won’t feel like you are riding a horse.

It is for this reason that AFG ellipticals are front drive. With a rear drive machine the pedals are further apart because of the drive mechanism that is positioned in between.

Easy Access — The pedals are placed low to the ground and are easier to step on and off.  This is in comparison to rear drive ellipticals where you have to step over the center mechanism.  Also, this machine is suited for individuals who need an elliptical for a basement with a low ceiling. However, you want to  verify the height of your ceiling and compare that to the user height, and the height of the pedal when it is at the top of the elliptical motion.

StraightUP™Body Posture — The positioning and posturing of the AFG elliptical trainers keeps your body upright for maximum comfort. You’ll find on many elliptical trainers your body tends to lean forward.

A More Natural Foot Path — The AFG elliptical trainer stride mimics a natural running or walking motion while minimizing fatigue. It is more flat than oval.

          AFG Elliptical Trainer Reviews

I have few comments.  First, I prefer the two dual rail design found on most of the Sole front drive ellipticals. Excluding the AFG 18.1AXT, all the AFG ellipticals have pedals that ride on a single rail. The Sole design provides a more stable elliptical motion over the long run.

Second, I would like to see AFG ellipticals have interconnectivity with the Internet so you can track your progress online and get motivation programming.  A trend you will find in brands like NordicTrack.

I would avoid the lower models including the AFG 2.0AE, AFG 3.0AE and the AFG 4.0AE. Focus on the newer AFG 3.1AE, AFG 4.1AE and the AFG 18.1AXT. I particularly like the AFG 18.1AXT Elliptical – See Review.

One of the biggest challenges in searching for ellipticals is to choose the right elliptical based on your budget and exercise needs. Schwinn is a brand that is gaining hype for offering ergonomic ellipticals.  There are also many alternatives to Schwinn ellipticals in the market that are equally good. Read on to know more about Schwinn ellipticals and their alternatives.

          Notable Features of Schwinn Ellipticals

People purchasing an elliptical have to make sure their money is invested in the right product. Well, you don’t need to be an expert in cardio-physics to choose the right elliptical. We will break down the standout features of different ellipticals offered by Schwinn so you can know the deatils of the product before you invest in it.

Schwinn started its journey in 1895 as a bicycle manufacturer, and by 1965, it entered the exercise equipment market. Today, Schwinn is a pioneer in exercise supplies like treadmills, recumbent bikes, and ellipticals. It is also known to offer world-class ellipticals at an affordable price. Since Schwinn has focused more on affordability, there can be some limited attributes. However, you can always choose a new-age elliptical from any other brand. Currently, Schwinn offers three elliptical models with prices ranging from $599 to $1,099. Some of the specs on Schwinn ellipticals are:

          • Adjustable resistance for smooth flow during a workout

You should be familiar with the resistance technology used in the ellipticals. They are equipped with a braking system that enforces resistance. Take any low-end cardio equipment, and you will find manual brakes. Additionally, people are now frustrated by the continuous sound made by motorized brakes in low-end exercise machines. New-age ellipticals are equipped with an electromagnetic braking system that implements resistance without any sound.

The higher the resistance of an elliptical, the more difficult it is to ride it. The resistance of an elliptical always works opposite to the direction of running or the movement of the pedals. Schwinn ellipticals offer multiple levels of resistance to satisfy everyone’s needs. It offers ellipticals with 16, 20, and 25 levels of magnetic resistance. Want to test your toughness and feel like you are going uphill? Well, you can augment the resistance of your elliptical for rigorous training without the squealing noise of the brakes.

          • Experience less strain with a perimeter weighted flywheel

Don’t panic if you have never heard of a perimeter-weighted flywheel. The flywheel of an elliptical is a metal disk that moves according to the pedal movement. A perimeter-weighted flywheel has more weight around the outer edge. It helps in maintaining the foot’s movement without any stress. As per the law of inertia, any object will remain in motion until an external force is implemented. Based on this law, the perimeter weighted flywheel maintains the pedal movement until resistance/brake is applied.

Why do people want to ride a bicycle rather than run on a flat track? Well, they want to reduce the stress on their joints and ankles. The perimeter weighted flywheel replicates bicycle riding and offers a smooth flow. With Schwinn ellipticals, you can focus on building stamina and fitness without placing additional strain on ankles, hips, and knees,

          • Enhance your fitness regime with workout programs

Want to access curated workout programs to burn fat or train abdominal muscles? Well, you can access several workout programs with Schwinn ellipticals. From fitness tests to recovery tests, they offer it all. Want to take a little break after a quick burst? You can opt for a workout program with breaks at frequent intervals. Schwinn ellipticals offer workout programs for heart rate, quick start, recovery, etc.

Have an interest in designing your workout regime according to your preferences? Well, Schwinn ellipticals also offer custom workout programs for enhanced personalization. You don’t have to pay anything extra to access these programs. The cost of any Schwinn elliptical includes the charge of built-in workout programs.

          • Heart rate monitor for a safe workout experience

Not that anyone wishes for it, but mishaps can still occur during a workout. It is essential to monitor the heart rate at all times while exercising. Monitoring heart rate becomes even more important during a high-intensity workout. If the heart rates aren’t normal, stop exercising and meet a doctor right away.

Schwinn ellipticals come with pulse grips and a telemetry-enabled console. You will have abundant data related to the heart function right in front of you on the console. Schwinn also offers a Bluetooth heart rate strap for effective wireless monitoring during a workout. By knowing your heart rate at all times, you can have a safe workout on an elliptical.

          • A unified view of workout data with Schwinn ellipticals

Tired of using different types of fitness bands for getting complete fitness data? New-age ellipticals can help you know the internal state of your body organs in real-time. All Schwinn ellipticals come with an LCD screen that displays your complete workout data. You can keep your fitness journey on the right track with abundant data. With Schwinn ellipticals, you can learn about RPM, miles, resistance, course profile, pulse, calories, and other metrics. Display readouts not only modernize the elliptical but also help achieve fitness goals.

Schwinn ellipticals can bear a maximum user weight of up to 300 lbs. The ellipticals also come with transport wheels for enhanced portability. Using a Schwinn elliptical, you can switch between miles and km whenever needed. Overall, Schwinn ellipticals are a good buy for fitness buffs.

However, you can get an even better deal at a lower price with Horizon Fitness. Ellipticals aren’t bought only for a short duration. diamondback elliptical trainers reviewSmooth Elliptical Motion

I recently checked out the line-up of Diamondback elliptical trainers at ProSource in Raleigh. In addition, I spent about an hour discussing the pros and cons of their machines with Dan Young, their sales expert.

Diamondback is best known for their exercise bikes, which are very popular and found at numerous sporting goods stores. However, their ellipticals have gotten some serious exposure after the Diamondback 1260Ef received a top rating from a popular consumer magazine.

Note: Check out our Elliptical Trainer Best Buy Reviews.

What makes Diamondback elliptical trainers unique is that they come in both front and rear drive models. The rear and front drives have different feels, with different appeals. Some like the free-floating feel of the rear drive, while others prefer the front leaning motion of the front drives.

            Diamondback 1260Ef Front Drive Elliptical

The front drive on the Diamondback 1260Ef design is similar to an Octane, but considerably less money. Moreover, unlike a Sole elliptical, the pedal sits on a wheel located at the front of the pedal, rather than on a rear rail and has a 19″ stride.

What makes the Diamondback 1260Ef stand out is the ability to adjust the elevations, similar to adjusting the incline of a treadmill, allowing you to burn more calories in less time. There are only a couple of other high-end ellipticals that have this feature – Precor and Octane. However, both of those brands cost at least a $1,000 more than the 1260Ef.

It should be noted that the 1260Ef and 1190Er come with an optional light commercial warranty, which says a lot about their durability. See our complete review of the Diamondback 1260Ef Elliptical Trainer

diamondback elliptical trainers consoleDiamondback 1190Er Rear Drive Elliptical

The rear drive Diamondback ellipticals have a 21″ stride, which is longer than your average elliptical. I felt this gave it a nice smooth stride, and was comfortable for my height. This would be a good fit for anyone above average height.

The foot pedals angle with the motion, reducing the possibility of numbness from long use. Each elliptical comes with wireless heart rate control to give you a more accurate picture of the workout you’re getting.

The main difference is that the Diamondback 1260 has:

            • Upgraded console and display.
            • No need to plug-in, there is an on-board alternator
            • Better selection of programs, including customizable programs.
            • Handlebars adjust forward and backwards making it comfortable for different sized users.

            Our Diamondback Elliptical Trainers Review

In general, we found the Diamondback ellipticals to all have a smooth elliptical motion. The ellipticals were relatively quiet. I really liked the adjusting elevation feature of the Diamondback 1260. That is a sweet option.

Diamondback has been building ellipticals for the last 9 years. Their models are strong contenders in $1,500-$2,000 price range. Overall, Diamondback ellipticals are a solid value. You can find them at local fitness equipment specialty stores or at Amazon.com

            Dirt Cheap Ellipticals!

eclipse elliptical trainer reviewEclipse Elliptical Trainers have one important selling feature, their price. They are dirt cheap. Their primary market is individuals who wish to get back into shape and lose weight. That represents a significant portion of the American population. The Eclipse ellipticals compete for the low-end market with ProForm. They currently have four models that cost between $350-$550. If you are considering purchasing an Eclipse, the question you have to ask yourself is whether this is a value or a cheap substitute for a real machine?

Fitness Quest is recalling about 23,000 of its Eclipse 1175e Elliptical Trainers. The cranks that connect the foot platforms to the rear wheel of the machine can break during exercise, posing a fall hazard to consumers.

            Short Stride and Light Weight

With a 15″ stride you have a very limited elliptical stride, that tends to be bouncy. The elliptical stride is more circular than elliptical, which is not ideally what you want in an elliptical trainer.

These machines are not built for tall users. Anyone that is above average height will find the elliptical stride and the upper body motion restricting. One customer stated, “The movable arms are too short for my hands so my hands are never fully stretched.”

The various models weigh around 90 lbs. And the designs are very compact. This can impact the stability of the machine, especially if you weigh more than average and you plan to do some rigorous workouts.

eclipse elliptical consoleThe warranty is very suspect. I can’t find specifics regarding the warranty, except that it is a 1 year limited warranty. One retailer that sells Eclipse ellipticals states that there is no service warranty, only parts. Service and extended parts warranties can be purchased. Actually this is the first time I have run across an elliptical trainer that did not come with at least a 90 day service warranty.

One comment I see over and over regards the noise. Apparently these machines tend to be noisy, but at these prices what do you expect.

            Fitness Source Review

There are two concerns with the Eclipse elliptical trainers. First, they are cheap machines built with cheap parts. Therefore they are more likely to breakdown when subjected to regular, rigorous use. Second, they are compact and light weight machines. For some, the workout will feel restricted and uncomfortable.

If you are use to working out on a commercial elliptical trainer at the gym, you are going to find the Eclipse very disappointing. Of course, the cost is about a tenth of the commercial grade models. But reviewing numerous customer comments, there are a number of satisfied customers.

I would suggest before you make a purchase, go out to one of the large sporting goods stores and try one out. Sports Authority sells Eclipse. Compare their ellipticals to other models in the $1,000 price range, like Sole and New Balance. See if the feel of the workout is comfortable to your size and weight.

            ConsumerSearch Review

Consumer Search gave the Eclipse 1110 HR/A a “Best Buy” in the budget category. They stated:

While reviews warn that machines in this price range won’t hold up like Precor or Life Fitness elliptical trainers, the warranty and variety of programs might make the Eclipse worth a look.

Customer Reviews – Various Eclipse Models

The customer reviews I found are very mixed. Some users found the machines to provide a satisfying workout at a bargain price. While others were disappointed by the quality of the machine and the service.

“After 2 years of use the machine developed a irreparable mechanical problem!!!!”

            Mike A –

“The machine is sturdy and the controls only take a minute to figure out. It assembled easily, with all tools needed in the box. The unit is quiet enough that I can use it with my 20 month and 2 month old asleep in the same room. The only draw back is the short stride. Great for my wife but took a bit for me to get used to.”
Epinions.com Customer Reviews Superb WorkoutPros: Compact, solid construction
Cons: NoisyAlthough the unit is relatively compact, it is VERY solid. It does not rock or sway even when I’m going at it really hard. The biggest downside to this nifty piece of machinery is the noise. It wasn’t that noticeable in the first 2 months or so, but after that I noticed that the crank mechanism makes a lot of squeaking and creaking noises about 10 minutes into my workout.Great elliptical for the pricePros: Very compact, fits just about anywhere and is on wheels. Relatively inexpensive.
Cons: Foot pedals cut off your circulation to your feet after awhile.

“Alright, first off, I’m probably bigger than most people that would use this machine. When I got this machine at the first of the year I was 250lbs. Now I’m down to 240lbs after a month. This might be the cause of the problems I have had, but they aren’t serious enough to make the machine bad.”
“The machine does require some maintenance. I had to regrease it after a month and after 2-3 weeks I had to open it up and tighten the bolts holding the pedals on.”

One last note on customer comments. One customer raved about the customer service and how attentive they were. Another was in rage over the misinformation and delays they encountered. They stated they ordered a model that was no longer available and were sent out a cheaper model. Between the two customers it sounded like they were dealing with different companies.
